في العرض الأول له بأفريقيا وقبل عرضه التجاري المنتظر بالوطن العربي، يتوج فيلم باص ٢٢ للمخرجة ويندي بيدنارز بجائزة أفضل فيلم بمهرجان جوبورج السينمائي في جوهانسبرج بجنوب أفريقيا.
وقد أقرت لجنة التحكيم، وفقًا لمجلة فارايتي، في اقباسها عن الفيلم قائلة “تحدث هذا الفيلم عن التحديات الأساسية التي يواجهها المهاجرون المهمشون. لقد سلط الأداء الدقيق لبطلة الفيلم الضوء على الصمود والإصرار اللازمين عندما يواجه الفرد نظامًا اجتماعيًا وسياسيًا.”
وقد بدأ الفيلم جولته بعرضه العالمي الأول في مهرجان تورنتو السينمائي الدولي بكندا حيث استقبله الجمهور والنقاد استقبال حافل، وكتبت مجلة Issue Wire “يجذب فيلم باص 22 انتباه الجمهور من خلال سرده المقنع وأدائه المشحون عاطفياً. إن قدرة الفيلم على إثارة التعاطف الحقيقي وإثارة التأمل فيما يتعلق بالقضايا المجتمعية، مثل المساءلة والإهمال في المؤسسات التعليمية، هي شهادة على مهارة بيدنارز كمخرجة سينمائية.” ثم استكمل الرحلة بمهرجان جيو مامي مومباي السينمائي بالهند ومؤخرًا بمهرجان ديوراما السينمائي الدولي بالإمارات الذي أُقام بين ٢٨ فبراير / شباط وحتى ٣ مارس/ آذار.
وتحدثت بيدنارز لمجلة فارايتي قبل العرض الأول للفيلم في تورونتو، قائلة أنها استلهمت أن تمنح صوتًا للأشخاص المهمشين أو الذين يواجهون تحيزًا غير واعي في مجتمع الشرق الأوسط. وقالت: “إنه أمر صعب هنا لسرد هذه القصص بصدق، ولإعطاء صوت لهذه القصص، حتى للأشخاص غير المرئيين، لقد واجهت تحديًا في ذلك”.
ويدور فيلم باص ٢٢ حول رحلة أم تحزن على فقدان طفلها وسعيها للحصول على المغفرة بينما تستكشف موضوعات الاغتراب والتواصل والتأمل في تجارب الأفراد الذين يعيشون في بيئة متعددة الثقافات.
على خلفية مدينة تكتسحها الرمال في الخليج العربي، حيث تستيقظ أناندا على يوم مليء بالوعود، لكن مع وقوع حادث مأساوي تذهب ابنتها الصغيرة ضحيته، يتحطم حلم أناندا في حياة أفضل لعائلتها من تلك التي تركوها وراءهم في الهند. تذهب أناندا في رحلة من الحزن والغضب، بصحبة رماد ابنتها، وتنسى أن لديها طفلة أخرى على قيد الحياة. تصل الأمور إلى ذروتها عندما تكتشف أسرارًا تضع علاقتها مع زوجها وعائلتها في مأزق.
الفيلم من تأليف وإخراج ويندي بيدنارز وبطولة الممثلة العربية الشهيرة كندة علوش، وتانيشثا تشاترجي التي فازت بجائزة أفضل ممثلة في العديد من المهرجانات العالمية، بما في ذلك جوائز الأفلام المستقلة البريطانية عن دورها في الفيلم البريطاني BRICK LANE، وكذلك نجم بوليوود أميت سيال المعروف بالمسلسل الشهير INSIDE EDGE الذي تم ترشيحه لجوائز إيمي العالمية. في عام 2018، وأروشي لاود.
الفيلم إنتاج مشترك بين الولايات المتحدة والهند والإمارات العربية المتحدة والأردن، إنتاج المنتجة الأردنية نادية عليوات مؤسسة شركة Screen Project اشتهرت نادية بإنتاجها والمشاركة في كتابة الفيلم اللبناني الناجح سوليتير (2016) والفيلم الأردني لما ضحكت موناليزا (2012). بجانب جونيت مونجا مؤسسة شركة Sikhya Entertainment وهي منتجة أفلام هندية، حائزة على جائزة الأوسكار، ومرشحة لجائزة البافتا. ومونتاج ميشيل تيان، ومدير تصوير سفيان الفاني. وتتولى MAD Solutions المبيعات العالمية والتوزيع بالعالم العربي وشمال أفريقيا.

OSN’s first original feature YELLOW BUS takes top prize at South Africa’s Joburg Film Festival
Making its mark on the festival circuit ahead of its highly-anticipated theatrical release across the Arab World, OSN’s first-ever original drama feature YELLOW BUS by Wendy Bednarz has just taken home the Best Film Award at South Africa’s Joburg Film Festival, which concluded on Sunday, March 3rd.
According to Variety, which was quick to pick up the news, the jury — in their citation for the award-winning film — acknowledged the vital issues that the film addresses, stating that it “spoke to the core challenges faced by marginalized immigrants,” adding that “the protagonist’s nuanced performance highlighted the resilience and determination needed when an individual faces a social-political system.”
In tandem with the news, the film just screened at the UAE’s Diorama International Film Festival, which is running from till March 3rd.
Starting its festival tour with a bang, YELLOW BUS world premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to massive success, scoring rave reviews from international critics, including Winnie Wang of Cinema Scope, who hailed the film as “a moving portrait of a woman’s unwavering commitment to justice for all.”
Meanwhile, Issue Wire showered the film with more praise, admiring all its working parts and lauding Wendy Bednarz, saying, “YELLOW BUS captures the audience’s attention through its compelling narrative and emotionally charged performances. The film’s ability to evoke genuine empathy and provoke introspection regarding societal issues, such as accountability and negligence in educational institutions, is a testament to Bednarz’s skill as a filmmaker.
Painting a world that highlights the textures of the desert landscape and the diversity of its people, YELLOW BUS centers around a mother’s journey to grieve the loss of her child and her quest for forgiveness while exploring themes of alienation and connection and reflecting on the experiences of individuals living in a multicultural environment.
In the scorching heat of the Arabian Gulf, the daughter of an Indian family is accidentally left behind on a school bus, leading to her tragic death. As each family member reacts differently to the situation, the mother, shattered by grief, refuses to settle until she uncovers the truth about what happened to her daughter and ensures that those responsible are held accountable for their negligence. Will she ultimately succeed in her quest and find solace in accepting the accident?
Written and directed by American filmmaker Wendy Bednarz, the film stars Kinda Alloush alongside Bollywood Indian star Tannishtha Chatterjee, who won the Best Actress Award at several international festivals, including the British Independent Film Awards for her role in the British film BRICK LANE, as well as Bollywood star Amit Sial, known for the famous series INSIDE EDGE that was nominated for the International Emmy Awards in 2018, and Aarushi Laud, who plays the child that puts everything in motion.
The film is a co-production between the US, India, Jordan, and the UAE that is written and directed by American filmmaker Wendy Bednarz and produced by Jordanian producer and founder of Screen Project Nadia Eliewat — who worked on the award-winning film WHEN MONALIZA SMILED — alongside Founder of Sikhya Entertainment Guneet Monga, whose short documentary THE ELEPHANT WHISPERER won an Academy Award.
With MAD Solutions handling the international sales rights as well as theatrical rights across the Arab World, YELLOW BUS was lensed by award-winning French Tunisian cinematographer Sofian El-Fani, who has won many international accolades, including the César Award for his film TIMBUKTU. El-Fani’s other notable works include BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR and IT MUST BE HEAVEN—both premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival — and Netflix’s original film PERFECT STRANGERS.
Wendy Bednarz is a writer, director, and arts professor at Abu Dhabi’s New York University. Before becoming a filmmaker, she cut her teeth in NYC’s fashion industry, working for Stephen Sprouse at the old Andy Warhol Factory, where she developed a taste for the offbeat and a love for still and moving images.
She then wrote and directed the featurette documentary BURNING MONEY (2018) and several narrative shorts as well, including LEAVING GUSSIE (2007), ON CRYSTAL (2010), and AURORA (2000). YELLOW BUS is her debut fiction feature.
